Binge-watching home renovation shows magnifies the amount of projects needed to be done around the house. How these five steps helped alleviate the overwhelm of projects vying for my attention. You can also apply these steps to your financial goals.
I just came up for a breather after binge watching the Home Network (formerly known as HGTV) for days.
I've consumed so many home renovations, construction projects, decorating ideas to last me a while.
You know those T.V. shows where you watch one and say, "Just one more". That was my Saturday – one more turned into 12 different shows.
Now I'm looking around our house noticing how 1990s it is – and wanting to update the wall colour, type of flooring, exterior doors, so much.
It’s overwhelming – all these projects are vying for my attention, where do I start?
Step 1: Brain dump – I went area by area writing down everything that needs updating – each project. I had to get it out of my head and onto paper.
Step 2: Prioritize – figuring out which projects are most important to least important. Although I think every project is important there are ones higher on the priority list than others.
Step 3: My why – Understanding why a project is so important helps prioritize and alleviates my anxiety of not trying to get everything done at once. Essentially, asking myself “Why do I need this project done”.
Step 4: Timeline – I don’t need to get everything done now. This helps reduce self-imposed pressure. If I set a five-year timeline to complete one or all of these projects, that may be sufficient time, or not. I give myself permission to adjust the timelines if needed, they're not set in stone.
Step 5: Cost – of course the cost of a project will also contribute to where the project is on my priority scale. Getting the true cost of a project grounds the project in reality, not me pulling numbers out of my _.
Although I was talking about reno projects, you can apply these same steps to your finances. Try it. Go back over these steps and replace the word “projects” with “financial goals”.
Next time you feel overwhelmed with the amount of projects to be completed, financial goals to achieve or T.V. shows to binge watch , simply take a step back and start by writing it all down.
